On Gear Live: 2024 Nissan Z Nismo Review

DescriptionThe Heather Graham vehicle was cancelled after only six produced, and one aired, episode. Apparently, ABC had some reasons ‘Why Not’ - dismal ratings. Though undoubtedly disappointed, the lovely Heather Graham doesn’t have to sulk for long…there’s always hope for another Austin Powers sequel.

What's On TvNights like these are why you need at least five VCRs. Or DVRs. Or Tivo.

  • American Idol Season Premiere, 8pm, FOX: Does any other show have a chance against this perennial powerhouse?
  • Scrubs, 9pm, NBC: Two episodes of this hysterical series air tonight, ensuring twice the fun.
  • The Goonies, 8pm, AMC: Most likely people won’t be giving up hot series television for this flick, but we love the movie so much, we had to mention it.
  • Gilmore Girls, 8pm, The WB: Luke’s ‘big announcement’ is scheduled for tonight. But maybe the episode will be good anyway.
  • Law & Order: SVU, 10pm NBC: The best series of the franchise airs a new episode tonight, with Detectives Stabler and Benson showcasing their usual brilliance.
  • The Shield is new tonight at 10pm, FX.

With House, M.D. on hiatus for a few weeks, juggling tonight’s Prime Cuts is a bit easier.

We recommend:

8pm: Watch Gilmore Girls, tape American Idol.
9pm: Watch Scrubs (normally, you’d need to tape House, M.D.)
10pm: Watch Law & Order: SVU, tape The Shield.

Tune in each day for our recommended Prime Cuts!

DescriptionHollywood mega-director Steven Spielberg will soon flaunt his talents on television. The most famous director in Hollywood will bring a 12-hour miniseries entitled Nine Lives to the always experimental SciFi Channel.

Nine Lives will focus on characters who are each grieving over the loss of a loved one and somehow discover how to reunite with them in the afterlife through near-death experiences, SciFi executives said during parent company NBC Universal Cable’s portion of the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena.

No doubt movie and television fans alike are eagerly awaiting the premiere of this exciting new series.

Miss America

We here at TV Envy can admit it: we love the glorious tackiness of the Miss America Pageant. The costumes! The talent routines! The big hair and teeth! Yes, many people find it silly or offensive. It has been labeled non-feminist, degrading, and a bad example for young girls. But the question is can’t we forget all that and just have fun? The Miss America Pageant is a reminder of simpler times, of goofy humor and innocence so severe you just have to smile. It’s a time of rosiness, the women so hopefully earnest in their platform speeches and interviews, you can’t help feeling hopeful yourself.

And if none of that impresses you - well, there’s always the swimsuit competition.

Hugh LaurieA close bond between two men is not often seen on television today without some sort of romantic entanglement or macho posturing. Ever since the days of the 1960s Batman series, male friendships have been the object of jokes and accusations of homosexuality. Perhaps this is why you simply don’t see these bonds much on television today.

In fact, I can only think of two shows that ‘dare’ to celebrate this type of relationship to the fullest: NBC’s Scrubs and FOX’s House, M.D. Scrubs takes a delightfully comedic approach to J.D.’s brotherly love for best friend Turk, while House, M.D. showcases the poignancy found in the relationship between Doctors House and Wilson. The usually acerbic House shows his true self only around his best friend, and is able to admit his vulnerability to him. The two give each other advice and support, and maintain a rapport that is both touching and amusing.

Perhaps this could be the start of a new trend in television: the celebration of the power of friendship between men. Isn’t it about time?

Gene Simmons Reality ShowAlmost everyone is getting their own series these days. Gene Simmons is the latest rock-and-roller to join the craze, joining the likes of Tommy Lee and Ozzy Osbourne.

Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels, featuring Simmons; his partner, Shannon Tweed, a former Playmate of the Year, actress, and model; and their kids, Nick and Sophie. Dubuc described the kids as “articulate, funny, and bright,” which contrasts with their “wild and crazy” parents. This project follows a one-hour special on Simmons that aired under the Biography banner. I wonder if Gene will still ‘want to rock ‘n’ roll all night?’

Arrested Development Finale

Good news for fans of Arrested Development: FOX recently announced that it will air the final four episodes of the season, which had previously been shelved. Arrested Development has enjoyed a mighty resurrection of late, with Showtime in talks to pick up the series. No doubt fans are rejoicing, though there is some concern over the air dates of the episodes.

FOX aired what felt like a finale on Jan. 2. The episode, titled “SOBs”—short for Save Our Bluths, which is also the name of a fan web site trying to save the show—stuck to “Arrested’s” deeply self-referential guns by mocking both the conventions of ratings-grabbing stunts and its own insular nature (“Maybe we’re not that likable,” Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman) tells his family at one point).
But the network has decided to air the season’s final four episodes in one two-hour block Friday, Feb. 10. That night also happens to feature the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics on NBC, an event that is likely to dominate the ratings that night.

NewlywedsDo you have an extra $3.75 million lying around? Here’s your chance to spend it on a piece of television history. Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey’s ‘Newlyweds’ house, made famous by the popular MTV reality series, is up for sale.

Relive memories in the kitchen where Jessica failed so many times, or in the pool they never swam in. And since they never got around to any real decorating, imagine all the fun you can have making it your own. Many viewers seemed genuinely surprised at the golden couple’s divorce. There is only one thing that surprised us - that Jessica put up with being Nick’s meal ticket for so long.

Survivor PanamaCBS has announced the cast for the twelfth season of Survivor, premiering February 2nd. This edition of the reality mega-hit takes place in Panama, and features the standard cast of model-type Gen X and Y-ers, with the occasional middle-aged anomaly to add ‘balance.’ At this early stage, I predict Misty as the winner, a beauty who looks like she’s hiding something under that innocent smile. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see what drama unfolds. Who do you think will make it to the final round? Place your bets below!
